Southampton, New York 1970
Looking for a place for their old English Sheep dog to run, my parents made Southampton their home. They moved from New York City to Southampton. My dad was originally from the Midwest. Throughout my childhood he would recount the story how he fell in love with ocean, and made himself a promise that he would never leave.
Summers in Southampton
Every summer day, my dad would put on his goggles, dive into the ocean and swim. I would wait for him on the shore. I always had a towel and chair, I would read and bury my feet in the sand, and I would try not to worry. If he took too long, I feared he was eaten by a school of blue fish or a shark. I tried not to panic thinking how I would get home if he didn’t come back. He always return, I would see him running from a distance towards me.
I remember the day he taught me how to ride the waves
I must have been about 7 years old. He picked me up after day camp and we drove to Little Plains beach in Southampton; the beach we always went to and the beach I continue to go to. My dad and I stood at the shore and he told me to watch the rhythm of the waves and wait. While I watched the waves breaking on the shore, he explained to me that the ocean is very powerful and I needed to respect that. Finally, my dad took my hand and we walked together into the ocean. Never letting go of my hand, he told me when to dive under a wave and when to jump over it. Together we swam at the right spot, the perfect spot to swim with the waves, and we waited until the ideal wave headed towards us, then he told me to swim, he raised his voice so I could her him “swim” he cheered me on while I moved my arms and let myself be carried by the wave. I swam and together we rode the wave back to the beach. That evening I called my dad up from my mother’s house and asked him if he could take me again the next day to ride the waves. This became our routine for the entire summer.
An afternoon with Jess and Luca
I still love the beach, it is my happy place. It was a treat for me to for me to spend the afternoon with Jess and Luca on my beach in Southampton. There smiles, laughter and energy was was reminiscent to my childhood, and the time I spend with my kiddos on the beach. Documenting moments like this, are why I love family photography. Thank you Jess and Luca for allowing me to document a fun filled afternoon at one of my favorite places. To see more of their day, please check out their slideshow.
